BWHers gather in the lobby to celebrate the hospital ranking eighth on the U.S. News & World Report Honor Roll of America’s Best Hospitals.
For the 19th consecutive year, BWH placed among the U.S. News & World Report Honor Roll of America’s Best Hospitals, advancing three spots in the rankings from number 11 to eight.
In the guide’s ranking of the best hospitals, BWH is among the top 10 in six categories: Cancer, Cardiology and Heart Surgery, Diabetes and Endocrinology, Gynecology, Nephrology and Rheumatology. This year, BWH also placed in the top 20 in Gastroenterology, Neurology and Neurosurgery, Orthopedics, Pulmonology and Urology.
“The 2011 rankings are a tremendous achievement due to the extraordinary talent and enduring commitment of our nearly 15,000 clinical, research and administrative staff who are devoted every day to the pursuit of excellence in our mission,” said BWH President Betsy Nabel, MD. “Because of our staff, we are able to provide the best patient care, find solutions to many of medicine’s challenges, serve with compassion our local and global communities and train with foresight our next generation of health care professionals.”
Dana Farber/Brigham and Women’s Cancer Center was considered for the first time this year as one institution in the specialty area of cancer. BWH placed fifth in the top-ranked hospitals for cancer, a significant jump from 2010’s ranking of 16. Dana-Farber Cancer Institute moved up one spot from sixth to fifth in cancer care this year. BWH’s 2011 ranking in this specialty reflects BWH’s and DFCI’s integration to create one of the world’s leading cancer institutes with a world-renowned academic medical center into one superb cancer center for adults.
U.S. News ranked hospitals in 16 specialties and analyzed data on nearly 5,000 medical centers to produce this year’s rankings. Only 140 hospitals were ranked in one or more specialties and, of those, just 17 qualified to be placed on the 2011 Honor Roll.
Massachusetts General Hospital also saw success in its ranking this year, moving to second overall, up one spot from 2010. Other Partners institutions also earned high honors. McLean Hospital was ranked third among America’s psychiatric programs, and Spaulding Hospital ranked fifth for rehabilitation centers.
This year, BWH and MGH are the only hospitals in New England to be on the top 10 Honor Roll, and Boston is the only city in the country with the distinction of having more than one hospital in the top 10.
